Goals Update: Week 4

A pretty good week:

1. Blogging. A super week. I’m really happy with my post this week, and thrilled with the amazing image I found on Flickr. Also, my piece about my fingers was featured on Huffington Post Gay Voices, which feels awesome.

2. Novel progress. Not bad. Three thousand words this week.

3. Weight Loss. I joined Jenny Craig this week, and am on day five of my first week of their diet. So far, so good. I’ve been really good about sticking to the meal plan, and the food isn’t bad. It’s better than I thought it would be, and although I’m eating a lot less than I’m used to, I’m not particularly hungry. (Hmm, could there be a hidden piece of wisdom there?)

4. Dermatologist. This is still a freebie until the end of September when my first appointment comes up.

5. Hair. Definitely time for a haircut. I still need to figure out a plan for what to do longer term, but I think that’s going to have to wait until after I’m working with the dermatologist. So I’m going to remove this goal from the goal updates for a while, since if it’s boring me, I’m sure it’s boring everyone else, too.

6. Exercise. Hmm … does shampooing the carpet count? Because I had to do that three times this week! Jordan, who hasn’t had a bathroom accident since May, has peed on the carpet three times, and twice he tried to hide it.

  1. Tell me more about the Jenny Craig. How much does it *really* cost? And is the food edible? I’m in a position (without saying too much) to get discounts on Jenny Craig, but a cursory googling gave me a price list that shows their meals as being like $5-7 a piece, and I start doing the math of three meals a day times $7 a piece times seven days a week and I start to feel a little…overwhelmed.

Most importantly, Jenny Craig works really hard at being “the” weight losss solution for women. Do you ever feel weird being a guy doing Jenny Craig? Do they treat you any differently?

I know, I know, 9000 questions…but since I had to give up my shake diet I’m considering all my options.

    • It’s definitely expensive. Looks like the food is going to be about $100 a week. We did the math this week, and we were averaging about $250 a week on food for the four of us. So I’m guessing (since it was never separately tracked before) that I was spending about $75 a week. (That also doesn’t include anything I was paying cash for, like stopping at Dunkin’ Donuts after dropping the kids at school.)

Definitely more expensive, though. My hope is that I will be closer to the 2% on the “aim to lose 1-2% of your body weight each week” and that I’ll be pretty close to my weight goal by the end of 15 weeks, and be ramping down the Jenny food.

The food is … fine. It’s certainly no worse than a frozen meal from the grocery store. I’m kind of working my way through their selection right now, trying a bunch of things to see what I like. It may be first week enthusiasm, but at this point, I’m not worried about being grossed out by the food.

Marketing-wise, obviously, they know that their main target is women. As a stay-at-home dad, I’m pretty used to being the only guy a lot of the time. I didn’t get a weird vibe in my one meeting, but I’ve only been once so far.

I avoided Weight Watchers because I really didn’t want to go to a group meeting every week, and at Jenny Craig it’s a one-on-one. Also, I feel like I’m more likely to stick with the program if it’s a little on the easier side, and planning a whole new menu from the start doesn’t appeal to me. This way, I’ll get used to eating less, get a little more used to portion control, and then worry about planning new meals a little further down the road.
